Update since last year

It’s been a long time since I put up an update of what i’ve been up to. I’m going to do this once a month from now, and detail what I’ve been doing- for me as much as for anyone else. I can’t imagine too many people checking in here to keep pace with my musical movements, but it’s a crazy world we live in…

So

March and April last year was spent settling in at The Bodyguard, made easy by a stellar bunch of fine musos, but also rehearsing (and costume fitting) for a new production at The Royal Ballet, The Winter’s Tale. That was a seriously busy and fun time- to be onstage, close to these world class dancers and able to contribute to the arrangement of the onstage parts was a massive pleasure. Taking a curtain call with these incredible dancers felt like trespassing on someone else’s hallowed ground, they are an amazing group to watch work from such close proximity and literally at times breath taking.

In June Paraiso were asked to provide some of the bateria to play on the set of Pan, set for release this summer. A small group of us recorded a backing track at Air Edel which was used on set for a large scene involving hundreds of extras- and us, surrounding Tony Allen on his drum kit. What a legend- and I ticked off one thing on my bucket list when he gave me a 5 minute lesson on how to play the groove from Expensive Shit…I still can’t believe that happened, he was a total gentleman and it was humbling to meet him.

July and August were spent getting carnival together with Paraiso, which we won in the torrential rain… It was an epic day on several levels! The Bodyguard finished at the end of august, so back to life without a daily show to play- for now I hope…

October brought a day of recording percussion for The Man From U.N.C.L.E with Rob Farrer and a teacher of mine Paul Clavis, who pretty much lives in Abbey Road doing this kind of work- a really good fun day, great challenge and very inspiring.

November and December brought in depping on The Scottsboro Boys, a brilliant if harrowing show, playing some djembe at ENO on The Gospel According to the Other Mary and another run of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at The Royal Opera House.

2015 brings some depping on Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and some other projects, yet to be confirmed. By August I will have finished an MA…if I can get all the writing done…which includes updating this blog every month…
